# Applying to a job

> The two ways an application starts: applying to a public listing, or a recruiter reaching out first.

An application starts one of two ways, and both land you in the same place afterward.

## Applying directly

Find a listing on a company's career page and apply. Your existing profile pre-fills the application if you already have one.

## A recruiter reaches out

A recruiter can add you to their pipeline first and message you before you've done anything. You'll get an email with a link to view and respond.

## After you apply

Your application appears on your dashboard immediately, at whatever stage the company starts candidates at. See [Tracking your application](/candidates/tracking-your-application) for what happens next.
