# Changing a candidate's state

> The stages a candidate moves through, and how moving someone backward is handled differently.

Every candidate on a job sits in exactly one stage: shortlist, in review, in progress, offer, hired, rejected, or withdrawn.

## Setting it

There's no automatic pipeline that advances people on its own. A stage changes because a recruiter sets it, or because a candidate withdraws themselves. Every change is logged, so the history of a candidacy is always complete.

## Moving backward

Mistakes happen. Moving someone back, un-rejecting them, or returning a hired offer to review, is fully supported and treated as a correction rather than a fresh decision, so the record stays honest about what actually happened.

From the Candidates list, you can act on several people at once instead of opening each one individually.
