# Roles and permissions

> What owners, admins, members, reviewers and viewers can do, in a workspace and in the organization.

Everyone in Staffer has two roles: one in the workspace, which covers hiring work, and one in the organization, which covers billing, compliance and company-wide settings. What you can do is the combination of both.

The two are independent. An organization admin who is only a viewer in a workspace can manage billing but can't create a job. A recruiter who is a member of a client's workspace can do all the hiring work there without any role in the client's organization.

## Workspace roles

| Role     | In short                                                                                                                                          |
| -------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Owner | Everything an admin can do, plus changing the workspace's public URL and deleting the workspace. The person who creates a workspace is its owner. |
| Admin | Runs the workspace: settings, branding, the career page, message templates, teams and members. |
| Member | Does the hiring work: jobs, searches, candidates, messages, processes and listings. |
| Reviewer | Read-only access to the whole workspace. Can complete process steps they're named on. |
| Viewer | Read-only access to the whole workspace. Can complete process steps they're named on. |

Reviewer and viewer currently have exactly the same access. Anyone named on a process step, as a reviewer or an attendee, can complete that step whatever their role.

### What each workspace role can do

| Action                                                                | Owner | Admin | Member                                                               | Reviewer, Viewer                    |

## Organization roles

| Role   | In short                                                                                                                       |
| ------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| Owner | The person who created the organization. Everything an admin can do, plus demoting admins. There's one owner per organization. |
| Admin | Manages organization settings, billing, credits, compliance and organization members. |
| Member | Belongs to the organization. This role gives no access to organization settings on its own. |

Organization pages (**Settings** → **Organization**, including **Billing**, **Usage & credits**, **Plans** and **Compliance**) are only available to organization owners and admins, whatever their workspace role.

Organization members are often people who joined automatically because their email domain matches the company's. That's why the member role grants nothing at the organization level.

Change someone's organization role in **Settings** → **Organization** → **Members**. See [Organization settings](/admin/organization).

## Common questions

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="I'm the owner of my workspace but I can't see Billing. Why?">
    Billing belongs to the organization, not the workspace. If you created your workspace inside an organization that already existed, you're a member of that organization, not an admin. Ask an organization admin to promote you, or to handle billing.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Can I restrict a job to certain people?">
    No. Everyone in a workspace can see every job in it. A job's **Members** list and its team don't limit access. To keep hiring separate, use separate workspaces.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Can a hiring manager review candidates without a Staffer account?">
    Yes. Send them a [share link](/companies/share-candidates). They can read the candidates you picked and leave notes, without signing in.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Can I create custom roles?">
    No. The five workspace roles and three organization roles are fixed.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Can I transfer ownership of a workspace?">
    Not from the app. You can't change your own role, and you can't invite someone as an owner. If a workspace needs a new owner, ask us through **Support** in the sidebar.
