Staffer doesn’t have one global assistant. It has several chats, each scoped to what you’re looking at, and each with different rules for what’s saved.

Where you can chat with it

  • A job’s chat, on the left of every job. This is one shared transcript per job: every workspace member who opens that job sees the same conversation, with each message tagged by who sent it. It’s still there next time anyone opens the job.
  • The Ask anything chat on the Jobs, Talent pool and Applications pages. This one only lasts for your current visit: reload the page and it’s gone. It can filter the list you’re looking at, open a specific item, and, on the Jobs page, create a bare job for you to build out.
  • The home page. Before a job exists, typing here is how you start one. See Create a job.

Voice input

Click the microphone (Record voice message) to dictate instead of typing. This uses your browser’s own speech recognition, not Staffer’s, so it only shows up in browsers that support it. Holding ⌘D (Ctrl+D on Windows) in any chat composer works as push-to-talk: release the keys and the transcript goes into the message box, ready to send.

Hide or show the chat

Click the chat icon at the top of a job to toggle Hide chat and Show chat. Hiding it just gives the tabs more room. It doesn’t stop or lose anything.

Reset chat

The “More chat actions” menu (…) above the chat has one item: Reset chat.
On a job that already exists, this deletes the shared chat instantly, for the whole team, with no confirmation and no undo. On the home page, before a job exists, it starts a new draft instead. Your old draft’s chat isn’t deleted, just left behind.

Message length and stopping a reply

A message can be up to 8,000 characters. A counter appears once you’re close to the limit, and going over it disables Send rather than cutting your text short. While the agent is replying, the send button becomes Stop. Stopping ends the reply in your chat. A search that’s already running keeps going in the background, and its results still land on the Scouting tab when it finishes.

What it uses to answer

Every reply is grounded in your company knowledge, the job’s brief and notes, your own Communication tone and Notes for the agent (set in Settings → Account → Preferences), and, if the job belongs to a team, that team’s knowledge too.

What it can’t see

The agent can’t see your email, Slack or calendar. It only knows what’s in Staffer, so a decision made in a call or a DM is invisible to it until someone writes it down, for example in the job’s notes.

”Tell me more” on a candidate

The shared job chat doesn’t automatically know which candidate you’re looking at. Click Tell me more on a candidate’s profile panel to send a message naming that candidate, which is what lets the agent read their full record and answer questions about them specifically.

Whose messages get saved

Chats by members, admins and owners are saved to the job. Viewers and reviewers can chat and get answers, but their messages aren’t saved: a notice says so the first time, and reloading the page clears them.

Credits

Every message you send the agent uses credits, in every chat, including Ask anything and the home page.

Common questions

No. It’s one conversation per job, visible to everyone in the workspace who can open that job, not a personal thread.
Not for an existing job. Resetting it deletes the transcript immediately for everyone, with no undo. On the home page, before a job exists, resetting starts a new draft rather than deleting the old one.
No. It only lasts for your current visit to that page. Reloading, or coming back later, starts it empty.

What the agent can do

Which actions it takes immediately, which ask first, and what it can’t do at all.

Search for candidates

Turn the brief into a search the agent runs for you.
